AVID Information
The Elkhorn Area School District is aligned with AVID, a systematic approach to student achievement that benefits all students. Our district is committed to providing this proven program to its students at the high school, middle school, and elementary levels. AVID’s mission is as follows:
To close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college, career, and life readiness and success in a global society.
AVID Elementary benefits all students. It includes teaching elementary students organization and responsibility while instilling a growth mindset* philosophy of learning. The best teaching practices are embedded in all classes throughout the day and the students are introduced to methodologies and strategies that promote Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to learn (WICOR).
The AVID Binder is a powerful organizational tool. All 5th grade students will receive a new binder on the first day of school, which can either travel back and forth daily or stay at school. If your child chooses to keep the binder at school, the Assignment Notebook and Take-Home Folder will need to be removed and taken home each evening and returned promptly to the binder in the morning. Binders will be inspected regularly to instill and promote organizational habits that will enhance your child’s education for years to come.
More information about AVID can be found on the Elkhorn Area School District’s website. Please feel free to also ask us about AVID. The benefits to all students are immense and we are excited to continue to incorporate AVID in our classrooms.
Sincerely,
The 5th Grade Teaching Team
Mr. Brellenthin, Mrs. Blackwell, Ms. Gruber
* Growth Mindset is the philosophy “that students who embrace the belief that they can learn more or become smarter if they work hard and persevere may learn more, learn it more quickly, and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their learning and skills.” (Carol Dweck, Stanford University)
